, Latin American residents of the state of Texas, whose ancestors of Hispanic origin lived in northern states of Mexico such as Tejas and Coahuila before they were taken over by Anglo-Americans in 1845.
Old El Paso starts its story in 1917, when the canning company “The Mountain Pass Canning Company” from New Mexico was bought by a local resident of the city of El Paso in Texas. This new company, Old El Paso received its name from the city of El Paso in Texas, while the adjective "old" represents the period when the state of Texas still belonged to Mexico. The company primarily sold canned tomatoes and pinto
beans, one of the most common types of beans, and by 1938, Old El Paso was registered as a trademark. The company moved to various locations in the United States until it finally settled in Texas in 1958, and in 1969 they became the first national brand to offer a full range of Mexican dishes in American supermarkets and grocery chains. Old El Paso was the first company to start advertising and promoting Mexican cuisine in the U.S., after which grocery chains, due to the exceptionally high demand for Mexican food, for the first time had to have special departments in the store just for Mexican cuisine products. Taco, a traditional Mexican dish, which consists of a tortilla, namely a thin bread made of wheat or corn flour filled or wrapped around various fillings was introduced as an ideal form of dinner to the international market which was not yet familiar with the charms of Mexican cuisine in 1970s. Since that moment, the popularity of Mexican cuisine and the name of Old El Paso has only grown and today that name can be seen in every corner of the world.
